The End (Fin, 2012)! khanh

1. Plot Summary

A group of old friends reunite after 20 years at a secluded mountain cabin. Among them are Félix (with his girlfriend Eva), his ex-girlfriend Maribel, a playboy, failed businessman, and others, all with unresolved tensions and a secret involving Ángel, a former friend who suffered a breakdown years ago.

During the first night, strange things begin: a flash in the sky, odd drawings, etc. Then an apocalyptic phenomenon occurs: electronics die, clocks freeze, communication cut off, and the outside world seems deserted—people are gone, animals wander, abandoned towns and vehicles.

As the group attempts to make sense of what’s happening and find safety, members start disappearing one by one. Old conflicts, guilt, secrets rise to the surface. The phenomenon appears to be global. In the end, only Félix and Eva seem to remain, though the ending is ambiguous.

2. Notable Elements

What stands out / strengths:

  • Slow build of tension / atmosphere: The film does a good job of transforming an ordinary gathering into something uncanny. The isolation, the failing electronics, and the deserted landscapes contribute strong ambiance.
  • Character relationships & past secrets: The tension between characters—due to past mistakes involving Ángel—adds emotional weight beyond the apocalyptic setup. How they relate (or fail to relate) to one another becomes central.
  • Visual / production work: The film uses setting (mountains, cabin, empty towns) and imagery well. The drawings/sketchbook of Ángel, prophetic sketches, the flash in the sky are visually striking.
  • Ambiguity & mystery: The film doesn’t give easy answers. What caused the event? Is Ángel behind it (supernatural/psychological)? Are the disappearances literal or metaphorical? This keeps the viewer thinking.

What doesn’t quite land / weaknesses:

  • Some characters feel under-developed. With a large group, only a few arcs are given enough depth. Others are more like archetypes.
  • The pacing is uneven. Because much of the film is slow burn, some viewers may find the middle drags before the horror/apocalyptic elements fully manifest.
  • The ending’s ambiguity is double-edged: it’s thematically appropriate, but leaves many loose threads. For viewers wanting closure, that might frustrate.

3. Themes & Messages

  • Guilt, Secrets & Unresolved Past: Much of the emotional tension comes from what happened with Ángel decades earlier. The reunion forces everyone to face what they’ve buried.
  • Isolation & the Fragility of Civilization: When the lights go out, society’s structures (communication, transport, safety nets) collapse fast. The film examines how fragile normality is.
  • Human vs Nature (or the Cosmic): The disaster is something beyond human control; the film plays with how people respond when confronted with the inexplicable.

  • Survival, Morality & Relationships: Under crisis, past relationships matter. Who stays loyal, who tries to save whom, who betrays, who disappears—all test character.
  • Ambiguity of Reality: The film questions what is real vs perceived. Some of what appears may be psychological. The unknown plays a big role.

4. Personal Impressions

Strengths (from my view):

  • I appreciated how the film doesn’t rush. It lets dread creep in, and builds mood rather than rely solely on shocks.
  • The way the group’s dynamics unravel—how lying, guilt, shame come back to haunt them—is compelling. It makes the apocalypse more than just external threats; it becomes internal.
  • Visually, some moments are quite memorable: the flash in the sky, the quiet deserted towns. Moments where the film shows what’s missing (people, life) are haunting.

Less effective parts (my critique):

  • There are times when the characters make frustrating decisions (for tension’s sake) rather than ones that feel organic. This slightly weakens immersion.
  • Because of its ambiguity, some narrative threads feel half-started; e.g. causes or motivations are hinted at but not fully explored, which can be interesting but occasionally unsatisfying.
  • For viewers expecting more traditional apocalyptic horror (aliens, monsters, etc.), the film may feel too quiet or cerebral.

5. Audience Recommendations

You might especially enjoy The End if you:

  • Like slow-burn thrillers / apocalyptic dramas that focus more on atmosphere and character than constant action.
  • Appreciate moral ambiguity and psychological tension more than clear answers.
  • Don’t mind that things may remain unresolved and that many horror here comes from unknowns rather than overt threats.

Might be less appealing if you:

  • Want straightforward genre horror with lots of action or jump scares.
  • Strongly dislike ambiguity or open endings.
  • Prefer tight, fast pacing through all acts rather than a gradual build.

6. Conclusion & Rating

The End (2012) is a thoughtful, moody film. It blends the psychological with the apocalyptic. While it doesn’t resolve everything, its strength is in atmosphere, in how normal past hurts become more threatening when all the world outside is gone. It may not be perfect, but it’s haunting and stays with you.

Final Recommendation: Worth watching if you enjoy subtle, character-driven apocalyptic stories rather than pure spectacle.
